【Tips】Use Zerotier + Splashtop to achieve low latency and high-quality remote desktop.

Low-latency remote desktop new solution#

[Updated on 2023/3/26] I know Parsec! Now I have also switched to Todesk... Zerotier should be used as an intranet connection software, not as a remote desktop software.

Preparation#

You need to prepare the following:

Steps#

1. Configure Zerotier intranet penetration#

Refer to this article on Jian Shu for configuration instructions: https://www.jianshu.com/p/eac4067b2aa1

2. Configure Splashtop#

2.1 Configure the controlled end#

Open the installed controlled end software and log in to the Splashtop account.

[Optional] Set Settings - Sound to Output Sound both over remote connection and this PC

2.2 Configure the control end#

Open the installed control end software, log in to the Splashtop account, and you will find the controlled end. Double-click to connect. If the controlled end is not found, press F5 to refresh a few times.

Principle#

Since Splashtop's personal version does not allow connection through official servers, Zerotier provides us with a free, powerful, and secure local area network. Therefore, we can use Splashtop's direct connection mode within the same LAN. The measured latency is approximately 200-300ms, which may be due to Zerotier's servers being mostly located overseas.

Limitations#

Currently, the only limitation is the inability to transfer files between the control end and the controlled end. My current solution is to use Todesk, which can achieve a bandwidth of 70-100M when transferring files. It is more than enough for file transfers that are not very large (such as in the TB range).
